The original writers believed what they were saying as fact.

They did not want / need people to interpret their meaning.

They meant it exactly as they wrote it.
You only add interpretation because the text is just plain wrong.

Some of the writings in holy books are parables or teaching stories---not to be taken literally. They make a point about how to live one's life, but are not meant to be taken verbatim. This has been a common practice throughout history.

If everyone follow the holy book literally, then there would be no more human kind left. Reason is that there are several passages in each 3 major religion that requires some one to be killed for such an act. For example you are to kill those who are homosexuals, of a different religion, those who believes in witchcraft, those who corrupts etc, etc, etc.

I don't know, but I understand that back in the old days people tended to talk in riddles. There is always ambiguity in religious text, so a lot of people genuinely try to decipher which meaning is the correct one. Plus a lot of the text was actually passed down from mouth to mouth before it was applied to stone or paper. Now factor in Chinese whispers and you have yourself a dilemma :-)

What in the world are you snorting or drinking. If you are a true believer, then you have to take the Bible literally. It's people like you who don't and you are the ones we are trying to reach.

If they did we'd need a lot more jails. We might even run out of stones for kiling folks on some Saturday nights.
