It is "reverse" french braiding. Basically you divide the hair into sections. Start with one section and at the top of the hairline divide the hair into three parts. Take the right part and place it under the middle part and add a little bit of hair from the right side of that section. Then take the left part place it under the new middle(which was originally the right side but now the middle) and add hair to that from the left side. Then repeat starting with the right side again. It is kind of confusing to explain. But really easy once you figure it out. I'm not sure if there is any different technique for African American hair(in case you were wondering), because I know their hair may be textured differently, but I'm sure it is the same.

Oh God, that's something you need a visual for. Written instructions will not help help, I don't care how clear and concise they are. Its something that you just pick up on and learn like anything else, riding a bike, reading, etc. There are actually videos available for purchase on how to do cornrows. You can search the net like under black hair care for them. Or next time you're out somewhere and maybe passing an open salon or a booth in a flea market where they do hair, stop and watch for a few minutes. I don't have a cosmetology license but I can do all the styles I've ever observed even the ones done on my hair just from watching, memorizing and practicing.

Try these for some good tips on how to do cornrows. But without someone actually showing you it will be hard for you to learn.

Good luck.

How do the farmers make them so straight? Everytime I'm in the country, I've been amazed at how "orderly" they are planted. Is there some kind of farm equiptment that lines them up so perfectly straight or does the farmer just "eye" it up?

It is like a mini frenchbraid!
You do a regular braid but as you do it gather hair into the braid that is from your head.
