Constantine did NOT make Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. He issued the Edict of Milan in 313 AD that gave the citizens of the Roman Empire freedom of religion. The emperor who made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire was Theodosus.

Constantine, contrary to popular belief, was a lifelong pagan who was baptized on his deathbed. He made Christianity the religion of the Roman Empire because he saw it as a growing trend. The Christians and the pagans had been fighting for some time and Constantine wanted to end this. He figured that the Christians were the winning team and named their religion the official religion of the empire. He even made up a story that his army had seen Jesus and won a battle because of him. He said that he saw a cross in the sky that read, "In hoc signo vinces." This means, "In this sign thou shalt conquer." This made it look like Christianity had favored the empire. After making Christianity official he continued his pagan practices.

Also, his wife had converted to Christianity early on and many scholars think that she put some pressure on him to make Christianity the official religion.
