Sure sometimes the companies specifically require testers to have BE or B Tech background, but this is not mandatory...IMO what matters is a keen sense of observation as well as the ability to perceive a problem from different view points. In addition, having a good programming background esp. the innards (deep) knowledge as well as practical experience in coding makes your candidature stand apart.

From ur question, it seems u are just looking at this position as per someone else suggestion...you have to figure out for urself what interests you...coding, testing, documentation, system design or say imparting training...and this will be clear as you progress towards the completion of your course. Also, go and talk to people who are already in the related field and ask for their advice and opinion and see what they have to say. You can also look at the job-requirements published in newspapers or web-sites and contact the companies and see whether they are receptive to ur application or decline it.

BTW, also look at certifications that are offered in the field of testing and whether they interest you (and if you can afford them). Certifications matter to a certain extent but shouldn't be thought of as deciding factor...

Hope this helps and good luck!
