A goat that is able to get out of its pen. No matter how well you secure him, he gets out. They can be very frustrating.

The scapegoat was a goat that was driven off into the wilderness as part of the ceremonies of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, in Judaism during the times of the Temple in Jerusalem. The rite is described in Leviticus 16. The word also refers, in modern parlance, to one who is blamed for misfortunes, often as a way of distracting attention from the real causes.

A person or group that is made to bear blame for others. According to the Old Testament, on the Day of Atonement, a priest would confess all the sins of the Israelites over the head of a goat and then drive it into the wilderness, symbolically bearing their sins away.

A person who is blamed for something he or she did not do; a victim.

There are many scapegoats for our sins, but the most popular is providence. — Mark Twain (1835-1910), American humorist, writer and lecturer.

The actual term for scapegoat comes from the Bible where the people would put there hands on a goat to place their sins. the goat would then run out of the camp. In this way the sins would go away with the goat and the people would be "cleansed" of their sins.

Someone who gets blamed for something, usually done by others.

It comes from an old Yom Kippur tradition. A goat, the "Lord's Goat" was sacrificed. A second goat would be led away by the High Priest. He would confess his people's sins over this goat, take it out into the woods, and set it free. Thus, it would take away their sins with it. This was the "escape goat", which has, over time, been shortened to scapegoat......
