All the solutions I hear, including forcing yourself to think of other things like the furniture around you, don't really help very much. You can't block out your thoughts forever, and that's not really how confident people think. Even if I realize intellectually that other people aren't paying attention, it doesn't really make a difference emotionally, since it's not a switch that you can just turn on and off at will.

Interacting with other people can be a challenge at times, and all the time if you're constantly distracted. Try meditation. Meditation helps you focus your 'nog in one place for an extended period of time. Also, look at your diet. some foods tend to make people more agitated, stuff like caffiene etc...try finding a person that can help you work on how you talk with others. Practice looking someone in the eye for 5 minutes and talking to them. Speak up. too. If you're feeling self-conscious, you're probably 'burying' your voice, too, so they can't hear you clearly, which means they will 'tune you out'. Also, remember to try to keep a pleasant demeanor. If you start off on the defensive etc., and your mind's obviously somewhere else, would YOU want to talk to you?

This is not meant to be a downer, but I think ALL people remain self-conscious in some form all their lives. Those who seem to be the most confident of all ( those with lots of money and resources to maintain their appearances ) perhaps have greater self-image issues than others. If people were not so obsessed with what others thought of them they wouldn't care if they always had a new car, the latest fashions, were on the lastest diet, etc. etc, etc.

It may help to know that we are all in some way very insecure, regardless of our situations, and like you stated before, people are truly so self-centered that they hardly have the time to notice others around them. In order for us to avoid turning our thoughts inward we must instead focus towards others. This keeps the mind occupied so that we don't have as much time to worry about what others think of us.

I'm 42 and just recently figured this out. I'm a much happier person as a result.

Sounds like therapy and addressing social anxiety and low self esteem may help. I changed my attitude about the world I only care and worry about those I love and care about think not total strangers. Of course doesn't work all the time, family can be brutal, lol. Get a good physiologist to see you will find your root of this problem and be able to move on. Good luck

Self-consciousness isn't something you can eliminate. If you're not aware of yourself, you've suffered some serious brain damage. However with counseling, medication and other therapies of a holistic nature such as acupuncture and the like, you can manage your fear of the criticism of others. Depending on your situation, you can combine a variety of things such as therapy and meditation, or acupuncture and aromatherapy. It just depends on what works for you. Making sure you're not in situations that mess you up works too.

I suffered from HORRIFIC self-consciousness for years until I reached my mid to late twenties, and I still have bouts of it (in my 40s now). It got better as I got out of destructive relationships, went through therapy and got a job where I was appreciated for my work. There are now some medications that treat it; wish I'd had them available to me. It may be a form of social anxiety and is supposedly highly treatable with meds (but I'm definitely not a doctor). If you're self-conscious while in public, try to dress nicely and do your hair nicely before you go out. When you know you look good, you feel more confident.

wonderfull question--this helped me-prayin and lettin him in my heart-come to Jesus and then claim the blood of Jesus rebuke that thought -it works for me-then put in "whatever is good honest and pure think on these things" Philippians chapter 4
