Faced with death even the most hardened hearts will accept what they have known, albeit on a deeper-secret level, that there is a God, He is their Creator and the only object/person/reason/ thing worthy of worship.

True Atheists feel the only thing worth fighting against are things having to do with (a) God. Since most wars are about oil, gold, women, honor or (a) God (of which all the former qualify), that means most Atheists would choose not to be in a foxhole shooting for something they don't believe in. A true Atheist only believes in themselves, (sort of a self worship which is hypocritical because to them, they are god). So... In order to be in a foxhole, you must believe in something more then yourself.

There's another phrase I've heard that's truer: "There are no smug Christians on deathbeds."

P.S. Ahem. No more made up than the "no atheists in foxholes" story, Mr. Know. Someone made that up; it became a slogan, but it's still ficticious. There are atheists in foxholes. And there are smug Christians on deathbeds. Both are slogans, not meant to be taken as absolute fact. That's why I used the word "truer" -- because frightened Christians on their deathbeds logically are more common, because they're the ones who believe in hell and a cruel 'God' who sends people there.

I personally know someone whose uncle was a lifelong devout Christian -- who, as a matter of fact, was a fundamentalist Baptist minister for over forty years. On his deathbed, in front of a small gathering of church members who came to pray with him, this dying minister began shrieking in agony and screaming that he could feel the flames of hell on his feet and legs. Although he was weak and dying, he was thrashing about so violently that five men could barely hold him down. He died screaming that he was in hell. That's an absolutely true story.

Many Christians and other religious folks believe in an angry 'God' and are taught to feel guilt and to be afraid of 'God's' wrath. Their own bible mentions Jesus's admonishment that many who thought they were Christians will be turned away with "I never knew ye; depart from me."

It's a fact that many Christians, such as this minister, die in pure terror of burning in hell.

It simply means that everyone is praying to get out alive, regardless of whether or not they believed in a higher power
before they ended up in the foxhole, hiding from shrapnel and
bombs.

When the fan is getting hit, you're hunkered down as low as you can get wishing you could melt into the earth, the most common thought is, 'Oh God, I don't want to die.' If you were an atheist before the first round landed, you suddenly want God's help.

It's a lie often repeated by bible thumpers in the apparent attempt to persuade the ignorant & gullible that everyone turns to God when he is faced with dying.

It is demonstrably untrue, but that does not prevent thumpers from lying about it.

When people are facing death they tend to want to believe in something outside of this world will save them, or that they will be in a better place once they die. The fear makes them believe that there is something else out there protecting them.

As a minister from my church (and Veitnam Vet) says when the bombs are blowing and bullets flying at you, everyone there was calling on Jesus or God to save them. Why would a true athiest call out to something that they don't believe in?

I'm not familiar with this statement, but my guess would be that if you're in a foxhole (or any situation where you could die, and you want to live), you start praying to God.

That everyone prays when they think they may be about to die.

Troops in the frontline praying as they are aware of the danger and want some peace of mind.
