* How to Have Soft Shiny Hair Inexpensively *

A few simple tips on how you can care for your hair without splurging on professional products.

Steps
Don't brush your hair when it's wet (unless it's extremely slick with conditioner or detangler). That can stretch it and break it.
Straightening and blow drying does damage your hair.
Use conditioner every day. Be careful to keep it away from your face though (especially if you have oily skin). Also, if you have oily hair, don't rub it into your scalp and be sure to rinse thoroughly. Work it in really well and let it sit for 2-3 minutes.
Mayonnaise (yes, the kind you eat) is terrific for dry hair. Smear it all over your hair (again, for the folks with oily scalp and skin, don't rub it into your scalp or too close to your hairline) and make sure to really work it into the ends. A shower cap or plastic bag on your head will help contain it.
Bleaching is very bad for your hair. If you have to do it, make sure not to leave the chemicals on too long and do not do it often. Read the packages to see how often you're supposed to wait between treatments.
Have someone trim your ends every once in a while. If you think you can do it yourself, go ahead. But have someone else look at it afterward to make sure it's straight.
Don't rip your brush through snarls. If you don't have detangler spray, wet the area and apply lots of conditioner to work through it.
Sleeping with your hair in a bun can make it easier to brush in the morning and will control some of the frizz (if you have it).

Tips
Don't be talked into dying or cutting your hair in a way you don't want. It's your hair! You have to live with it, not your best friend/mother/sister/anyone else.
Try different brands of conditioner and shampoo. Remember, expensive doesn't always mean better.
Try rinsing with cold water after you shampoo. Use this tip for a few days and you will see fast results.

Warnings
If you're unsure of doing something to your hair, ask someone else first.
Always be careful with chemicals you put near your hair.

* How to Have Soft Hair *

Shampooing daily dries out the hair and removes the oils that would soften your hair naturally. To get soft hair you need to compensate for this oil loss.

Steps
Wash your hair as you normally would.
Rub in an anti-friz hair oil on the bottom half of your hair. A dime size amount should be enough.
If you don't have to blow dry your hair that day, don't.
Try not to use too much hair spray because it causes build up on your hair.

Tips
Dry your hair a little before you comb it out. You'll break off less of it.
Less is more. More brushing just gives you more split ends, not softer hair. People used to brush their hair longer to spread their natural oils down to the ends of their hair.

Warnings
Don't put the oil near your scalp or you will look like you didn't wash your hair for a couple of days.

it's the change of environment that is doing it to your hair. this may sound gross, but it works: get some mayonaise at the grocery store and put it in your hair(probably easier if it is slightly damp). wrap a towel around it, and let it sit for about 20 minutes. wash and rinse with a good hair product, such as garnier fructis. follow with a leave in conditioner and you should notice a difference. :-)
