• Jesus' claim, "I am the way and the truth and the life", is controversial because it strikes at the core of three great myths about religion.
• John 14:6
The first myth about religion is that all religions are basically the same.
• The uniqueness of Christianity is rooted in the uniqueness of Jesus himself.
• Other religious leaders promise to help you find truth and salvation.
• Jesus says he is the truth and eternal life.
• Other religions are spelled do, requiring works, whereas Christianity is spelled done, signifying Jesus' sacrifice for us.
• Illustration: In a Buddhist parable similar to the Prodigal Son, the errant son must work off the penalty for his sins, whereas in Jesus' parable, the son is welcomed back with forgiveness and grace.
The second myth about religion is that, although different, Christianity is one philosophy among many.
• Just because all religions are protected under the Constitution does not mean they are all equally valid.
• Illustration: Strobel relates how Mike Royco wrote in a column that he was a member of the Church of Asylumism, which believes that we on Earth are descendants of crazed aliens.
• Jesus authenticated who he was by living a perfect life, fulfilling prophesies, performing miracles, and rising from the dead.
The third myth about religion is that Jesus isn't the only way to heaven.
• The reality is that someone must pay the penalty for our sin, and Jesus is the only one that is sinless and therefore qualified to do so.
• Illustration: Strobel tells the story of some friends whose baby was jaundiced, and the doctor told them that exposure to a special light would cure the baby. The parents could not be accused for heeding the advice of the doctor, because he had credentials and experience, and they were acting rationally.
• Only the Great Physician offers the treatment that erases the stain of sin.
• Illustration: Strobel describes two country clubs; one admits only people who have earned their membership, and the other invites everyone to join, because Jesus has already paid for their membership.

Speaking personally, it isn't fear at all. Logic says that the events as described in the Bible simply don't make sense. The laws of physics haven't changed, and frankly, neither has human nature in the last two thousand years. One has to be willing to actively suspend disbelief in order to accept the Bible in any literal sense whatsoever. I don't mean any disrespect by saying this, but for me believing in the virgin birth and Christ as a deity, not to mention chariots of fire and resurrections, is tantamount to believing in Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny. I simply can't do it.

i don't think people are necessarily afraid. I think it has more to do with whether or not they believe the Bible as 100% truth and therefore believe in the Jesus the way he's described within or represented by preachers or interperters of the Bible.

Why do you assume people are fearful?
That is similar to asking why are people afraid to believe in Santa Claus.
The bible is a book of mythology.. The Jesus story is a myth.

They are afraid of giving up their personal rights and personal agendas. They like living in sin even though it causes them a lot of pain and suffer ring. they are afraid to give up their corrupt friends for fear of being alone. Fear is the fundamental reason why people do not accept Jesus as Lord and Savior. Satan operates off of the fear factor---it is what keeps him in business. If people were not afraid of Jesus, then Satan would be thoroughly bored for lack of somebody to intimidate.

I am afraid to take a stand for Jesus because of what family members may say. It's difficult for me to love those who are hard to get along with. But Jesus said nothing is impossible with God. So nothing is hopeless.

We have lived in this world with Satan in it since Eden.
Jesus is going to put him in the pit and make all as perfect as it was before Eden.
If we did not have this tempory life in the world with Satan, we would not have a chance to see all made new, even all of us. Rev.21:1-5; 20:1-6,12,13; 1Cor.1:15-28;
