It's never made much sense to me as one of the syptoms of my depression is wanting to withdraw and sleep a lot. Why would I want to be on a med that just makes me sleep more?

Yes, I admit it! I'm manic depressive, the manic days actually seem MORE normal, as they are pretty mild and usually involve an obsession with cleaning house. I don't see that as a bad thing.

Yeah, I did try a lot of them. I manage on my own now. Besides, I think on a whole, medication is pushed too much. Not to say it doesn't help some, but it doesn't work for me.

I don't know why for sure, but my guess is that if the depression is due to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), the meds will increase the release of blood sugar into the system. The brain will sense this and since hypoglycemia is the result of insulin overproduction (hyperinsulinemia), will process it by asking for more insulin production. This has the effect of pulling too much sugar out of the bloodstream (and possibly converting it to fat, as some people note gaining weight on anti-depressives), which results in the brain slowing the body down - withdrawl and sleep being 2 ways to do that.

Suggestion? Change your diet to one that controls insulin by controlling the intake of natural and artificial sugars and sweeteners. Go to the kitchen and get some protein, meat, a can of tuna (salmon is better) or whatever, and eat it. Also have some carbohydrate, like a handful of chips, an apple, or some carrots/celery, and also some nuts or peanut butter. Eat at least 2 ounces of the protein. Then drink a glass of water and do something else for 30 minutes.

Then, you may want to check out www.hufa.org, the library link to see what kind of diets will help control your insulin production. Really - any diabetic diet that cuts down or eliminates real and artificial sweeteners and other foods that are high in natural sugar will help.

Best wishes and remember, singing when you are depressed does help lift the depression.

Yes it is and yes they do make the depression worse in my case. So I stopped taking them. It is also strange that the TV commercials for meds gives you side effects and some fatalities may occur. I rather suffer with what I have then to take something that will effect me in a bad way.

lol, maybe doctors were tying to kill off people with depression but instead they just make them tired so they won't go talk to them any more. But seriously, I don't think they're supposed to, it might just be a side-effect. Talk to your doctor about it.

most people who suffer from depression will tell you either they sleep too much or not at all. So I guess one of the reasons is to let them sleep so they can feel rejuvenated.
