Hi, I am an Actor, and a moderately successful one at that. It takes a lot of hard work but you can make it pay. People generally dismiss artists, of all disciplines, for one of two reasons. The first is a form of jelousy. They feel we have a life of irresponsible joy, or, they wish that they had followed their own dreams. The second reason is that a lot of paople do not see 'The Arts' as a proper job, nor do they see it as very important.
It is without doubt one of the most important professions in the world. After all, in a coup-de-ta, who are the first people up against the wall? Not the Bankers, the Merchants, the Plumbers.........., but The Artists. We hold a mirror up to this sometimes ugly world and make people see the truth, and as holders of the truth Artists have been persecuted through-out the ages
" .......do they not maintain bawdry, insinuate foolery, and renew the rememberance of heathen idolatry? Do they not induce whoredom and uncleanlyness?.....". So wrote Stubbes in 1583

Try to ignore your detractors and follow your calling. After all you are likely to have many more critics as you travel this road :-))

Break a leg.

There is no need for you to explain your love of the arts to anyone. The study of, or participation in, them is a high calling. You may never get rich unless you become a "star" but you'll have a full, satisfying life surrounded by wonderful creations. There are a lot of options that open up when you graduate as well; curator, teacher, performer, analyst, reporter, critic, etc. Decide now what you want to do when you finish your studies. Of course, there's always "art for art's sake" but it doesn't pay very well.

I think you'll find, over time that you'll gravitate to people with similar interests and won't need to be defensive.

Because it is viewed as a frivalous vocation by some; not "real work". It is also viewed as problematic, as the success rate is less than ideal, but those with true talent can and do make a good living of it.

My Aunt and Uncle make a very good living at it (they are moderately famous), and have offered to help me out in the business, but I did not have the courage to follow my dreams...

Don't be mediocre. Follow your dreams, do what your heart tells you to do. When others question your choices, tell them it is what you desire. If they continue, thank them, smile, and walk away.

I'm a poet and a painter. People discourage what they do not understand - what they see as "lazy" or not useful. I suspect these people have very shallow lives and they do not understand that no matter how much money you have, you can't take it with you. However, an artist leaves something behind, forever, that will expand the limits of human experience.

It is not an academically stressful major true. But it does teach a great deal and prepare your for a career in the arts. My betrothed was the same major and she is now a well paid actress. Most of the real majors she graduated with are still finding entry level jobs.
So tell them thank you for the advice, and you will file it in its proper place.

Well its a good job you do. Where else will the next George Bernard Shaw or Lawrence Olivier come from? Don't listen to the voices of jealous, narrow minded people and follow your dreams! Good luck.

Without the arts, we are a dull society. Thank goodness for people who want to give form some sort of aesthethic value. Don't quit.

Excelling in those areas will take a lot of discipline... just like any other field.

"What was the last movie you saw?"... really get them talking about it...

"So do you think it would have been as good without the actors?"

Art in every form enriches our lives. Without it, we are merely existing.
