Technically, it takes 3,500 calories to either gain or lose a pound of fat. Overeat your caloric needs by that much and you will gain a pound of fat... create a deficit of 3,500 calories by diet/exercise and you will lose a pound (not all fat, you also usually lose some muscle, especially if you don't exercise!).

If you gain a pound or two that doesn't necessarily mean you overate enough to gain a pound of FAT... over night weight gain is usually related to fluid retention or even the weight of last night's dinner. Fluctuations in your daily weight is NORMAL and for some, as drastic as 3 to 5 pounds. Gradual or consistent weight gain where you find your jeans getting snug IS fat gain.

An extra 500 calories a day over what your body needs and can lead to a 1# gain per week. Having 500 calories LESS than you need per day can lead to a 1# weight loss per week. Try eating 250 calories less and burn 250 calories through exercise for the best results.

Probably more info than you needed!
