Service pack 2 is just a update of windows xp, just go to microsoft website(www.microsoft.com) and click windows updates, then the updater will check if your copy of windows is genuine or not, if its is genuine, the update will be successful but take note that if you have old version of windows xp, there will be many batches of updates for you. (just check for updates again and windows will notify you with what you should download) If your copy of windows is not genuine, try to search in yahoo for a javascript that can bypass the windows genuine validation in the windows update.

I don't think you're thick, but you might be a non mechanical person who's a little afraid of your computer
Sometimes these things can be pretty confusing.Go to
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/how.mspx and click on DOWNLOAD. Then follow the windows, answer YES when appropriate, and you're done.
Good luck!

Every new computer(branded) comes with an option of pre installed windows OS. You can ask for the upgrade from your computer vendor. If the computer is still under the warranty period or under the annual maintenance contract, vendor will do it for free.
