My dog is in pain from arthritis. The vet put her on a Joint Disease dog food plus two tablets of Dog Glucosamine. Once every two to three months she goes in and gets a shot of a new medication. Following is information on the meds from a geriatric dog website:

"Perhaps the best thing to ever come along for arthritis is an injectable product called "Adequan." This has been called a "fountain of youth shot" for its remarkable results in many cases. Developed as a product for race horses to keep them running and making money, it was tried by small animal vets and found to be greatly helpful for arthritis. The shot is given once or twice a week for four weeks, then a booster is given about every three months. It works by increasing the production of synovial fluid, the joint lubricant, and by stimulating cartilage repair. The earlier it is used in an arthritic case, the better the response."

We are careful to keep her weight down through moderate exercise (don't overdo it). You can also take her swimming if you have access to a pool the dog can swim in or to a vet Physical Therapist who has a dog pool. This gives exercise without stress on the joints.

A baby aspirin can be given as a booster to these if needed.

Depending upon your dogs health and what is causing the pain. You can give a buffered aspirin to a dog over 30 lbs. If it's a smaller dog give a baby aspirin. Do NOT give tylenol, ibuprophen, or any other pain meds. Where is the pain? Only use aspirin if it's a joint, or bone pain. Do NOT give for stomach pain. Only give twice a day and give with food. Do NOT use more than 3 days without consulting your vet as to what the problem is. If it's a bone problem and you plan to have it surgically corrected the dog needs to be off aspirin for one week prior as it is a blood thinner.

Check with the vet-They have very good medications for dogs with anti-inflammatory benefits. My dog was on several, the best was Med-Cam, liquid, cuz she got wise to the whole pill in the cold cuts. She had severe dysplasia and arthritis, and was only 2. Sometimes a plain old COATED aspirin can do the trick, but it can cause stomach upset. Good Luck.

You can gove regular asprin 325mg tablet.
The doseage is 1/4 of a 325 mg tablet per 10 pounds of bosy weight two times per day.
So if you dog weighs 40 pounds give her one tablet in the am with food and one in theevening with food.
I always start with one tablet ans see how they tolerate that then move up if you need to.
