Why is it that so many non-smokers (or ex-smokers) can get so worked up about second hand smoke? Doesn't anyone else seem to have a problem with the factories, oil refineries, dump trucks, garbage trucks, cars without mufflers, etc. that belch out thick, black, noxious fumes and smoke all day, every day? It just seems to me that so many people get really uptight when it comes to second hand smoke. (Obviously, this doesn't apply to people who live with a smoker and are around it all the time.) I'm referring mainly to people who stay away from places which allow smoking...basically people who just walk by someone smoking outside and freak out about it/fan the air and fake cough, making an *** of themselves.
Really...how often are you in an enclosed space with a smoker (or smokers) with no ventilation for long periods of time? Probably not often. How often do you breathe the exhaust-tainted air outside? I would guess every day!

I currently don't smoke (quit over 5 years ago), but I remember how it was when people fanned the air, forced themselves to cough, etc. I'd like to know what exactly it is they're trying to accomplish by doing this. When that happened to me, I'd usually take a big hit off my cigarette and blow it in their direction. Normally, though, I tried to be a courteous smoker...never smoked when I went out with non-smoking friends, stayed over in my own little corner when I smoked outside at work, washed the smell of smoke off my hands after smoking, etc.
