Great Question.
This is the expanding of your mind. When your previous beliefs (I don't necessarily mean religious) don't answer a question fully, then we begin to form more questions.
Your beliefs were taught to you as you grew up. They are your parent's and or families thoughts and opinions, what influenced you. (After all, who do we learn everything from while growing up?).
Your beliefs form the basis of your perceptions about everything you do and feel.
Your own opinions and thoughts are based own your perceptions.
Every body's opinion is based on their perceptions (what you were taught and your "experiences"). Yes they are yours. Your personal experiences may teach a different answer than you were taught. Now you are forming you "own" opinions.
Now go experience more and learn about others experiences. BUT, do it responsibly and safely.
Good luck!

BRAINWASHED - ENGLISH DICTIONARY DEFINITION
to implant new ideas in the mind of a person and eliminate established ones by subjecting the person systematically to great mental pressure.
I think you will find you were never brainwashed???
You should thank your parents for teaching you all that they know and of course you should go out into the world and discover new things for yourself gained by experience, you will end up teaching your children everything that you know, but then they will go and learn from their own experience also.
The only opinion that matters on how to live life on this planet is Gods so i would seek his opinion becoz you are exactly right, the world is gonna try and influence your thinking and how you choose to live and the bible tells us that Satan is the God of this age and runs this world without this world even knowing it, so very dodgy following anything other than God, there are lots of people on the broad road, but this road leads to destruction, stick to the narrow road, it may be lonely sometimes but at least you will be with God, stick with God, you need a relationship with Jesus. He has a plan and a purpose for your life, how are you gonna get there if your not seeking him daily to get there, read the bible for yourself, mix with other christians, accept the holy spirit if you haven't already, follow Jesus, feel free to email if you have any questions, Happy Searching Godbless T.R.U.T.H xxx

Unless you grow up alone and as a hermit, your opinions will always be tainted by the influence of other people such as parents, friends, the media, and school. It is human nature. The only thing you can do to be sure you aren't brainwashed is to never take things at face value from a parent or professor. In other words, parent says something simple like "the sky is blue" then you go and read as many books about it as possible to decide whether or not you agree with their statement, one from a book, or a combination of answers from the book. You must especially do this when you are in college... many of my friends have become brainwashed by liberal professors. Sure, it is a lot of work, but it will be worth it in the long run.

Being brainwashed you don't think about the things said to you, you believe them to be true without any doubt...
Being disciplined is respecting your parents or whoever, but still questioning their words and decisions, making you own opinion on the matter...

If your opinion does not agree with the Bible, then you rest assured that it is yours, and not that of God's. Mental freedom rests in the peace of God, in obeying his commandments and living a life according to his will. The sin-filled life is not freedom, as most people mistakenly believe, but is bondage to the devil. When sin rules your life, then you are locked away in a prison. Sin always has its consequences that must be paid, but a life in Christ is free of debt. A life in Christ is like having lots of money in the bank and no debts----no debts, no worries. Jesus loves you. Be thankful that your parents brought you up in the teachings of the Bible.

The difference is that somewhere during your discipleship and learning, you would get to know God personally for yourself. Hasn't He ever answered a prayer or comforted you or blessed you? You have had the option to be mentally free all your life: free will.
James 1:5 says that if any one lacks wisdom let them ask God and He will freely give it. So I encourage you, aside from what you've heard from your Mom and Dad and aside from what you feel may be speculation or lies, ask God to counsel you and reveal the truth to you. I know He will.
Praying for you and also knowing in my own thoughts and wisdom that you'll get your answer and be assured.
Peace

If you were being brainwashing you can't be sure if its your opinion. Hope your parents do let you have your own thoughts. Since your thoughts are different I don't think you were brainwashed and were disciplined. Your thoughts are your own.

No one can belief exactly the same as their parents, because you're raised different (including your general environment).
Your upbringing and general envorinment make your thougts, including religion.
Leaders of what we in Holland call 'sektes' are brainwashers. They are after your money or want to have all the power over you.

Regardless who's idea it is, or where you heard it from, always check it out. Always research, follow up, and study. Then you can develop your thinking on a matter. But do one thing, keep your thinking Bible oriented. It's the best source of knowledge on paper, and you cannot find no higher source of backing than from God.

I believe the only unforgiveable sin is for a mother not to train, guide, and educate her children spiritually.
Upon the age of reason (Baha'u'lluah, prophet-founder of the Baha'i Faith, sets this at the age of 15), a child should choose for her/himself her/his path to God.
The first 7 years a child must be trained; the second 7 years, s(he) must be guided, and the 3rd 7 years, and thereafter, they must be loved and prayed for. They must be released to God.
