First off in comparing the email apps; Yahoo! is one of the largest e-mail providers on the Internet far bigger user base than gmail. And if you read all of the reviews that compare the two Yahoo Mail is the by far the better product all around. Take for instance the Wall Street Journal review by renowned Personal Technology column writer Walt Mossberg:
The new Yahoo Mail is far superior to Gmail. Yahoo more closely matches the desktop experience most serious email users have come to expect. Gmail, by contrast, is quirky and limited. Its only advantage is its massive free storage, which exceeds what most people will ever need.
The new Yahoo! version is radically easier to use. For example, there's a preview pane, just as in desktop programs, that allows you to view the contents of an email without opening it. You can open multiple emails at once. You can drop messages into folders you create. You can right-click on various items to see short menus of useful tasks, like "add sender to address book." You can delete multiple messages at once by selecting them and clicking on a trash-can icon.
By contrast, Gmail has none of these new, fluid, desktop-like features. You can't scroll through all of your messages' headers without loading a new Web page. And there's no preview pane, only a feature that shows a snippet of the content of an email.

1.Google search is definitely better than Yahoo. 2.Google offers / products are better those of Yahoo. 3.I prefer Yahoo Mail, but Gmail is in no way bad. 4.Yahoo is indisputably ahead when it comes to navigating around and all that. The Yahoo main page is probably the best thing in the world. 5.Google has SO many extensions like YouTube, Google Videos, Google Talk, Orkut, Google Adsense, Google Adword, Blogger, Google Pages..... that you stay associated with in some way or the other. Final Result : Google and Yahoo are the joint winners, I can't imagine the internet without them.

Google is better at search and email because of simplicity and accuracy. Yahoo is better for all the content and structure. They both have their high points. I like Yahoo for entertainment, but I use google for search and email.
But really I don't think you can go wrong with either.
