As long as you use the Works version you used in 98. XP and 98 are only operating systems, the program itself has no effect on your Works program...at least I didn't have any trouble opening my Works files in XP and I upgraded to SP and installed Works 8 and the Works 8 opened the files I had made with Works 4.5

I had a recent question answered by a kind answerer (what a dreadful word!) about using old 98 progs on XP, and it was simple:
ALL PROGRAMMES > ACCESSORIES > PROGRAMME COMPATIBILITY WIZARD.
I took my friends' advice, and it works like magic - just follow the instructions on screen when you've reach Prog Comp Wizard. I was able to transfer some old but cherished games (which turned out to be from '95' rather than 98!) and I'm well pleased. In the words of "Pop Larkin" - PERFICK!
