People do not realize that the center speaker is probably THE most important speaker in a surround sound set up. Why, because all of the dialogue comes through this speaker. This is where most of the talking comes from. The other speakers add to this sound and are important but not as much as the center channel. The other speakers you do have or buy should be timber matched because this is important. This in short means that the other speakers should be the same brand so the sounds are not too different. If you are planning on placing any of your speakers on or near a tv, they should be magnetically shielded to avoid interfering with your tv picture. Any type of a speaker system you get is going to be much bettter sound than that of the tv itself.

If your system does not have a center speaker, dialogue is sent in equal amounts to the two main front speakers. For small systems, in which the main front speakers are less than 4ft apart, it is actually better to eliminate the center speaker and use the main speakers. Any non-stereo sources you listen to will come out the center speaker only. I found, when I had a center speaker for my tv watching, I was listening to my center speaker only most of the time.

In terms of a surround sound system, the center speaker is usually located directly in front of the viewer, under the TV screen. The audio signal going to the center speaker is limited to the mid-range, primarily voices and such, while your booming bass would be sent to subwoofer with four other speakers (2 front, 2 rear) that carry the remainder of the sound. The center speaker should be magnetically shielded so that it can be placed close to a TV without causing interference.

A center speaker is exactly what it says it is a center speaker. In Dolby Digital 5.1 there are five main speakers, 1. left front, 2.center for 3. right front, 4. left surround, 5. right surround.
The main function for the center speaker is for dialog, but carries the main action sound as well. The rest of the speakers are used for movement such as a car going from left to right across the screen, or machine gun fire that is sprayed across the scene, or a bomb explosion.
the .1 in Dolby Digital is for low effects or bass, the subwoofer.
