It may sound funny, but I put on a pair of swim goggles. It works like a charm.

The tearjerker in onions is a compound called propanethial-s-oxide, which is released in a vapor when onions are cut...
When the vapor comes in contact with the eye, it is converted to a form of sulfuric acid, which produces the stinging sensation and subsequent tears...
Cutting onions under water or chilling them before cutting, will retard the enzymes that generate the noxious chemicals.....
Some other suggestions for preventing tears when working with onions include;
1) Keep the root on while peeling and chopping. A variation of this is to cut from the top leaving the root end intact until the last cut!!!
2) Be in a well-ventilated place and cut fast!!!
3) Use a good, sharp chef's knife. It glides through the onion with ease, allowing less of the compounds that cause tears to come out...
4) Wear a pair of safety goggles or a cheap, disposable painter's mask...
5) Put a slice of bread in your mouth, with half of it sticking out to "catch" the fumes...
6) Put some white vinegar on the chopping board before cutting...
7) Burn a candle immediately adjacent to where you're cutting. The tear-causing gas is drawn toward the heat source...
8) Purchase pre-chopped onions...
Last, after cutting the onions, remove the smell from your hands is to run cool tap water over your hands while rubbing them across a stainless steel utensil, such as the bowl of a stainless steel spoon. If you have been cutting a lot of onions, this may not be as effective...

1 Burn a candle near the work area
2 Place onions in the freezer for 20 minutes before cutting
3 Chop the onion under water, under running water, or pre-soak in water
4 Don't wear contact lenses
5 Keep the outer skin on the onion as long as possible
6 Breath only through your mouth
7 Hold a piece of bread in your mouth
8 Use a sharp knife
9 Wear swim goggles or a diving mask
10 Place the cutting board next to a gas range and turn on a burner or two
11 Put white vinegar on the chopping block to neutralize chemicals
12 Use a fan to blow away or suck up the fumes
13 Chew on a raw onion
14 Don't chop the onion root -- or do it last
15 Hold a wooden matchstick between your teeth -- match head out

With 25 years of food service(cutting onions) experience I can tell you that there is one way that has ALWAYS worked and several that don't.
A piece of bread on the end of the knife not only gets in the way, it doesn't work well at all.
Keeping the onions in the cooler helps, but is not 100% the answer either.
Salt? I guess if you need salty onions...
The match thing..I've watched more people cry with a match in their mouth...(and laughed a bit)
"I don't understand, it always works"
Having someone else cut them certainly is advantageous, but not always practical...
Running water?! It might work but what a mess! And for the life of me I can't figure out how you can put a cutting board in the bottom of the sink without plugging the drain or cutting yourself from the onion being too slippery to hold on to...or without washing the cut onion down the drain...Sorry...you'd have to be..well, anyway...
Okay....here is the 100% all time, fool proof way to cut onions without crying...
Ready?
Shut your mouth.
"What did he say?! Did he just tell me to shut up?!?"
Not exactly. From the moment you cut into the onion...do not open your mouth.
Allow me to explain:
When you break the flesh of the onion it immediately gives off an irritating gas, the name escapes me...sorry...but when you open your mouth it allows this gas to flow into the sinus cavities behind your eyes. Depending on the strength of the gas it will, like tear gas, cause your eyes to water and "burn" your eyes. I have watched many grown men run out of a prep room crying because the guy next to him was cutting onions. I've seen whole prep rooms cleared of several people due to onions. I've had kids tell me I'm not human because I could stay in the room when noone else could...But I know the secret...and share it with anyone who'll listen. Those that run out of the room are the ones who were "too smart" to fall for my remedy. Only to eat crow later.
Chewing gum...I believe that accomplishes the same thing I am suggesting...not too many people chew gum with their outh open.
Anyway...want to cut onions and not cry? Shut your mouth...and gitter done! :)

when I cut onions, I always burn a candle and cut the onions on my cutting board under cold water. To get the smell off after, I wash under cold water, rub with salt & then wash with soap
or
Chill the onion for at least 30 minutes before cutting. The sulfuric compounds contained in the onion do not react with the air as quickly when they are cold.
Trim off stem end and peel down to the root end. Leave root end on as long as possible because that is where the sulfur is most heavily concentrated. If possible cut, slice or chop the onion as much as possible before removing the root end.
Additional tear saving tips: (Experiment with these tips and see what works best for you!)
Slice under cold running water.
Peel the onion, cut in half and let soak in water for approximately 10 minutes before cutting.
Light one or two candles in the area you are cutting the onion.
Be sure to use a sharp knife to expose less of the sulfur compounds to the air.
Have a fan blowing the fumes away from you.
Place cutting board on the stove top and slice or chop onions with the exhaust fan running.
Use white distilled vinegar to brush down the cutting board before slicing and chopping onions
Try holding your breath while you are cutting the onion.
Keep your mouth closed while you are slicing or chopping onions.
Use a food processor for chopping.
Wear safety or swim goggles. Glasses and contact lenses may also help.

Do you find that some onions are stronger than others? I cut an onion the other day and my eyes were stinging, I had to go away for a while and then try again. Do you think it might help if you cut it outside? Or wear goggles!!!!!!!!!!

when u have to cut many onions at a time (for some dish like pav bhaji or biryani or bhel puri) u can cut each onion into half n soak them in a big bowl containing cold water.....the reason for this is tht the volatile substance(which actually irritates the eyes to cause them water)can dissolve in water! after 10 to 15 minutes u can cut those halved onions fine and see tht when u cut them the irritation is very negligible! try it out! same thing applies while cutting a single onion tooooo

I've stopped crying while cutting onions ever since I started wearing contact lenses. Bit expensive way though, if you've got OK eyes...
