There are lots I suppose. A feeling of great inequity globally (compare the massive wealth and prosperity of the West to the rest of the world), where the international community, such as the UN is entirely impotent to create change, and a Western world which main priority is to further its own agendas. National, religious and ethnic narcissism is another reason - the idea that one group is superior to another. The desire for self-determination (as in examples with the IRA, ETA and the FNLC to name a few European terrorist organisations).
Each terrorist organisation has its own history, but it generally boils down to the idea that one group feels it must use force to free itself from a controlling force - i.e. the government.

I'd have to agree with Edthescienceguy (sorry if I put the name wrong)... greed. But, I guess, the form of greed would be different for each person. Some want to be martyrs, others just want to take over and have people under their thumbs.

This is an awesome question i might say.
I dont know exactly but i can guess,
My guess would be that poverty, and stress
have a role in it. Apparently many are brainwashed
at an early age to hate. religion and politics also
play a role.

they think that someone is threatening their way of life, their freedom. we did the same when we thought the british were taking away our rights.
fear is another cause. their afraid that they may be wrong, so they lash out as well.
hatred is another.
its complicated, and varies from one terrorist to another.
