When in doubt, go for a better stone in a smaller carat. A cheap stone will show all it's flaws and not have the brilliancy or sparkle that a good quality stone will have. This is true for all stones, not just diamonds. (In a poor quality diamond flaws can be seen with the naked eye and often appear as flecks of dirt on the stone)
Personally, I think your ring should balance your finger and style. I actually told my husband that I didn't want anything *larger* than a .5. I got a .34 (third carat) princess cut with good color and clarity. After adding my promise and wedding bands to my engagement ring, the ring takes up most of the space between my first and second knuckles. The total carat weight of my ring (3 rings made into 1) is now somewhere between 1.5 and 2.0 Let me know if you'd like to see my ring and I'll send you a picture.

I've always been told that the diamond is suppose to be worth as 2-3 months of the guys salary. So if he makes $2,500. a month, then the center diamond should be worth at least $5,000. But it all just depends on the relationship and what you want. A lot of people don't have engagement rings, they just go with wedding rings.

It really depends on your tastes, it doesn't really matter what other people do. I have very small hands and if I had a 1 carat diamond, it would look tacky on my finger, so we went with a smaller carat size.
I would say the average is .25 - .50 carats. You have to think you're going to be buying more than just a diamond but also the metal to put it in.

The size does not matter at all. Everyone's circumstances are different, so it depends on what your fiance chooses for you. I like the idea of getting a ruby!

Wow, k@+ is kinda greedy. The karat size doesn't really matter but most people go for one karat. I think that is average.

I think it's 1 but also depends on finances available,it's ok to have smaller when younger, a ruby is nice, perhaps even prettier.
who cares what everyone else does anyway, too boring. it's ok to be unique
