The phrase “a personal relationship with Jesus,” is not found in the Bible. Thus, there is no sustained systematic theological reflection on what the phrase means. As a result, using the language of personal relationship is bound to lead to all sorts of confusion.

Rather than saying, “I have a personal relationship with Jesus,” why don’t people say instead, “I have faith in Jesus,” or “I believe in Jesus.”?

I never believed that either. I thought it was a free gift, salvation?

Its like saying have a relationship with me, or goto hell.

I think you just have to be sorry for your sins and repent, I dont think the relationship part is mandatory. But i could be wrong.

It's a marketing tactic. But then again the last millenium and some has been one long commercial for "holy butchery". That's how "personal" this relationship can get!

You can probably have a personal relationship with a god. But when these modern Jesus hoes say so it sounds so filthy. Like someone sticking their tongue in your ear- and not in a good way. ;)

If it's personal it's impossible to prove in any sense of the word "personal". It's just a tactic for selling Jesus on the street corner like a fake Rolex.

Pathetic really.

There may not be a verse in the Bible that says You need a personal relationship with Jesus but what does that mean? What does it mean to have a personal relationship with anyone? A personal relationship with anyone means that you know that person you are not strangers. You do have to accept the free gift of salvation that Christ gives you because he has paid the price for all sin. He died on the cross.

To have a relationship with anyone on a more personal level you must engage in some type of communication.

Talking or writing would be good examples when communicating with another person.

When maintaining a personal relationship with Jesus you must communicate through prayer.

not only is it not in the bible but organized religion in general discoraged it until recently. even now it tolerates it rather than encourages it. why, if the average man on the street didn't need a priest to interpret between him and god/jesus, then they wouldn't offer all that lovely money at church, or pay their dues.
think about it... if religions wanted you to have a personal relationship with jesus, why would they require you to attend services, confess your sins, take communion, or any such ritual?

No, it's not in the Bible. It's a figure of speech kinda, because, you are in a one on one praying, reading the bible Christian, spiritual relationship. It's not that were trying to trick people, it's that we actually feel we have a "personal" spiritual relationship.

When you talk to someone and they talk back - that is a conversation. If you talk to someone a lot and start to find out all about them, what they think and what they are like, this is called getting to know someone, when you talk to someone everyday and share absolutely every innermost thought, worry, insecurity, joy, happiness with them and ask them for help and advice and they do the same with you - this is called a relationship!!!

Anyone who talks to God & puts in the effort to find out all about Gods nature, Gods character, and how to communicate with God by reading the bible, & recieves his holy spirit by asking for it, (in the bible), & then the spirit comes and lives in the person (in the bible) the spirit then communicates with that person by teaching, guiding, giving information & gifts amongst other things, (also in the bible) is then infact - HAVING A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD!!!!! it's simple, no trickery intended just speaking plain English, if YOU want this relationship with God you can have it, it's free, He wants this relationship with every human being so He can work through them and sort out this planet. All you have to do is ask God for it, if you really mean it with all your heart, then he will come and reveal himself to you and you too can enter into a personal relationship with the very real, very supernatural, very much alive Living God. You just need to open your heart to God. Hope this helps. Feel free to email me if you have any questions, fancy a debate, or want to challenge me, i love this subject. No nasties Please. Happy Searching. Godbless T.R.U.T.H xxx

It is a personal relationship. My relationship between me and Jesus is between us, thus making it personal. If you've ever experienced it, you would understand what it means. I pray that you do have that personal relationship with Christ one day.

perhaps it is the "phrase du jour" that make people give you strokes and nod their heads and smile when you say it.

(people ARE social animals and receiving acceptance from others is quite reinforcing of certain behavoiurs)
