The problem with sugar cravings, I gather, is that if you crave sugar it really is the last thing in the world you should be eating
Take chromium and eat more fibre - brown rice, bran flakes, oatmeal (not much fun - but rough cut oatmeal cooked with blueberries, apples, coconut, vanilla (and no sugar) is very good). The more fibre you mix with sugar, the more the effects of sugar are lessened. Drink a lot of water every time you get a sugar craving, wait five minutes and see if you still have it. If you do, eat something with simple sugar, like a piece of fruit.
Also try to eat more protein (but don't overdo it ) - try eating a small handful of almonds (skins on) when you want something sweet. Also when you just can't stand it, I would keep the odd can of diet coke around (although aspartame is bad for you) some people think the sugar substitute Splenda (sucralose) which is made from sugar itself but has a fraction of the calories is better. You can cook with Splenda so can make sweet things. Be careful though as there are reports on the internet that even Splenda is harmful.
Constant sugar cravings can be a sign something is wrong with your health - if only the earliest stages, it could be a sign that your body's insulin is not functioning properly. There is a recent book about how to manage insulin resistance called The New Glucose Revolution. It is part of the next generation of insulin theories after books like the Zone and Atkins diet, which were problematic. It may not be the answer, but it's the latest answer.

Check your blood sugar. Cravings could be a sign of low blood sugar or blood sugar that is going down. You could also try to distract yourself with another activity.

I would recommend that you pick on fresh fruit or dried friut. Fresh fruit like grapes are great to satisfy the sweet craving that you are having, they are also a good source of fibre and naturally far free. I am also a 'picker' and go for the dried fruit option, raisins, sultanas, apricots etc... they are naturally sweet, fat free, and when they fruit is dried the nutritional value goes up dramatically! Raisins for example are not only high in fibre but also a good source of iron and calcium! If you like a bit of crunch then swap the cerial for a selection of nuts like almonds, brazils and cashews. Nuts are high in natural fatty acid which helps to fight bad fats (saturated fat), also great for other essential nutrients.

You don’t need to exercise for hours on end. Short, sharp sets of exercise will produce better results should you work hard. Get a passing up rope, skip for two a few minutes, do push ups for 60 seconds or so, skip for two minutes, rest for one minute. Then change the push around something else like sit ups as well as do the set again. Repeat it five times and it’s a fast, effective workout that will advance results than a long function or swim.

I have a problem with that too. I keep mixed nuts on hand a munch on them and sometimes I use fruit. The fruit works best. After a while I stopped liking sweets much.
