They mark them with their odor by rubbing the sides of their face against their human or someone they like.

Have you ever seen a cat rub up against a human? Cats have scent glands at the sides of their mouths, if I recall, so when they rub up against you like that, they're marking you with their scent.
To my understanding, this also mixes the two scents and creaes what's sometimes known as a 'family scent - cats who live together will do the same thing with each other occassionally, though they sometimes do it more through grooming each other.

Cat have scent glands in and around there faces. When they rub up against you they are rubbing there scent onto you. They are saying that you belong to them. You are there territory. It's a statement and a warning to other animals. Hope this helps you to understand your cat a little better.

The cat will begin to rub the side of his head and neck against your leg or another part of your body that is available to it. By doing so it releases it's scent onto you by glands located around the face, head and neck. Thus marking you as part of it's percieved territory

Cats have this scent gland under their chin.I think when cats scent you, that's when cats rub their chin on you. So the scent rubs off on you. It's something to do with territories.

Every cat has a certain scent. They have glands that secrete that scent near their mouth, above their eyes, and on their back, near their tail. When they rub up against you, they put that scent on you, saying to other animals that you are theirs and to stay away from you.
