regardless of other opinions a this moment ford is mechanically superior to VW. golf and passat have enjoyed a good reputation over the last 20 years but with their latest models they've just been believing everyone keeps buying them because of the VW label. Besides why pay a few 1000 more fore a VW badge when you can get just as good or even better alternatives much cheaper. If you are looking towards ford try the focus 1.8 TDCI or the mondeo 2.0 TDCI fast, rigid and reliable

The quality that VW used to be known for isn't quite the same these days - Ford Focus is definately what you should go for. I had a MK2 Golf, loved it, did a lot of miles in it, updated it for a newer model and was forever taking it to the garage. Friend of mine has a Focus - it's great to drive you can really push it through the corners and it feels solid. Ford have really got their act together.

Volvo V70 ( iv had 3 volvos, a 240 / 460sec and one Saab 9000..all very good cars but the V70 Turbo diesel is by far the best ,she will do 140mph all day long and still give 40mpg.!. as for ford cars (uk ) i would not touch one... i know , i used to build them ..!

The vw Golf is a great car that hold is money more than most.
Good luck mate ( just get a V70 Td , you will love it )

if handling is paramount then go for a focus, otherwise mondeo 130bhp tdci with the 6 speed gearbox

How about a honda accord? I've not driven a diesel honda, but I've had a few Hondas and they are incredibly well engineered machines, so if anyone can do a diesel well, it's them. I've attached an independant review so you can check it out.
