In the typical 3x zoom lens, the telephoto capability is only a little higher than 100 mm. That's not enough for real distance photography. It's only good for getting closer subjects big enough to fill the picture.

There are several 12x digicams that are much better, with optical zooms up to about 430 mm. These will get you much closer views. You can also get an add-on lens that takes it out to aound 600 mm. The add-ons cost $100 to $150

Then if you get one with 5 to 8 megapixels, you can crop and enlarge it even more on a computer.

These also have Image Stabilization to reduce the need for tripods. Some costing between $300 and $500 are:

Sony H1, H2, and H5
Canon S2 IS and S3 IS
Panasonic FZ7, FZ20, FZ30

For professional long distance photos, you need a d-SLR camera with a set of removable lenses, and a tripod. These take finer pictures and you can buy higher mm telephoto lenses. All that can cost several thousand dollars.

I chose the Sony H1 and have gotten some great telephoto shots. Since it is a 2005 model, the cost was only $340. Something like that is a good way to get started until you are ready to spend lots more money.

Have Fun!

3x zoom is not really long enough for true telephotography. It depends a lot on what you want to take. If it is wildlife, then you should be looking at something that gives at least the 35mm equivalent of 300mm focal length (conversions are usually quoted in the spec). Digital zoom gives no better results than you would get by cropping a photo in the PC.

You should consider interchangeable lenses if you are serious about telephotography - and don't forget the tripod!

No, a 3X optical will generally give you the equivilent of 105mm.
The newer cameras are capable of 10X and 12X optical zoom, and are much better for getting in closer.

3x is usually not enough if you are not close to the object. Look for digital cameras that allow you to attach extra long-range lens. Canon sells these lens separately.

Yes, If you have a good pair of legs to run up to the subject and back. No if you want to stand in one place.
