I mean... for example, when you pet/hold/hug them, how do they see that gesture? Can they tell they are loved?

Yes they can. When Barn cat adopted us shortly after, she became pregnant and let me stay with her when kittens were born. My husband and I have nurtured and protected all 6 of our cats. Mom is 18 months old now and babies are 4 months old. Mom brought us a bird egg a couple of months ago and laid it at my husband''s feet . She then went to her kittens who were looking at the scene with curiosity. She seemed to whisper something to them and they went to play. First I have to say that I am an avid Sudoku puzzler and much of the time I am home I have a book or newspaper clipping of a puzzle under my nose. Morning after the bird egg gift from Mom cat, one of her boy kittens, Picasso (he has a goatee), came running to me as I was leaving for work. He placed a perfectly square little scrap of white paper at my feet and looked up at me to check my reaction. I think he thought he had brought me something I would really treasure...paper (just like the sudoku puzzles). I have no doubt that these cats love us, feel safe and loved with us and love each other very much. When the kittens were small Mom cat would wrap her arms around them and wash their faces all over just like any other loving Mom. When they are outside playing she is near. When we accidentally left a kitten outside thinking we had them all in she stood at the door crying until we figured out what was wrong. Yes, They love and feel loved.

Yes, absolutely. Our pets respond wonderfully to gestures of love and affection and show it in too many ways to answer here.

Yes. Not all cats or dogs like being held, but most do. Any form of attention makes them happy.

yes, when you hug a pet they will usually purr or snuggle back. thats how they show there love. but they will know if they are being hatred or hurt, and they will hiss or growl.

Of course they can!, They can also sense your feelings by the tone of your voice and I also believe they can sense if you are "dog -friendly" (if you like dogs)

Of course they do !
Why are they happy to see you when you come home?
Why do they wag their tails and follow you around?
They like to play and be petted, don't they?
