The keyhole. It is a much more complex mechanism. Generally, you have an idea of what you want the key to look like so you make the keyhole with the general shape of the key in mind. This shape is determined by the security features you are looking for in a key, althoug the ultimate combination of ridges is simply what you design the keyhole to be.

Keys are very easy to cut.
