My female Border Collie watches TV on occasion. Not like ...ER.. or the News... etc... something has to strike her Fancy,, ) by the way her name is Fancy!) Tonight it was MeerCat Mansion! I was flipping thru the channels and she was off doing her own thing,, when I hit upon this Animal Planet Channel with the Meer cats and she went Balistic!! Mostly it is with animals that her attention tunes into, but sometimes it;s with things like Sports! Hubby is a huge Sox& Bears fan and I am a Cardinals& Bears fan so we enjoy our sports( depends on where you were raised I guess as to what type fan you are) But it so hillarious to see this BC go off at the TV!!
Hubby does not get it! I say it is because she is a smarter type breed and picks up on not only the animal shows but what excites us. Do you agree or do you think some breeds or some dogs have their own likes and dislikes of programming? Or s it just the noise that attracts them?

Great story! That makes me miss my dog Lady.
She used to watch t.v. with me..when I had it on animal channel or America's Funnies Video and she'd see a cat or a dog running on the scene and then run to the right she'd go around the side of the t.v. baffled by wear they were then back to the screen..look at me and whine. I'd call her and hug here and say "It's ok! then hug hug hug her. She was happy then...
Thanks you for letting me remember good time with my dog.
I had her for 16 years...lots of good time..

Tears to you for the love of our pets...
Bless them for walking into our lives!

I used to have a kitten who watched Jeopardy (and no other shows!) I swear it's true - she'd sit right in front of the screen and bat her paw at the question-boxes.

The smarter of my two dogs likes Animal Planet too, especially when dogs or birds are on tv. Occasionally she also likes Law and Order. A very smart dog - she understands many words that I never really tried to teach her, like names for her different toys.

The dumber dog of my two never watches TV, but then she's also terrified of mirrors - she never did understand the concept of seeing things that aren't real. If she sees her reflection in a mirror she still barks at herself - she's 3 years old and dumb as a post.

I definitely think it's a question of brain function, and that some animals have an interest in concepts more than others.

The visual image and sound of the animals seems obvious enough.

If you are verbally and physically reacting to the sports, I would tend to say she's reacting to your sense of excitement...not actually getting into the game :) If you keep giving her attention when she does it, that probably also contributes to the repeat performances. If you were in the back yard and suddenly jumped up and starting running around, I would expect the dog to so the same..unless you did it so much she became bored with it.

I have 2 Siberian Huskies. One of them likes to watch TV occasionally, and the other one could care less. The one that likes to watch TV likes to watch animal planet - I think it's the noises that intrigue her. She also liked watching the movies Snow Dogs and 8 Below, which featured a lot of Siberian Huskies - again I think it was the noises (and the dogs barking) that caught her attention, but who knows for sure!

Yes, it is the sounds that attract her and it is perfectly normal. Even my dogs watch TV with me. The other day I was watching the 1o2 dalmatian dogs DVD and in the part where the dogs bark and decorate the Cruella-cake, my dogs also started barking and jumping and they became very hyper.

Just make sure that the volume isn't on too high.

Hope that helped!!!

if your dog likes tv, she might like music too. This site is for dog music and my dogs love its music:

I think that they can tell what we enjoy watching. My lab does the same thing when i am watching television. Or a movie that i have seen before but her favorite show is Clifford.
