Specifically, the scanner doesn't seem to register at all. When I push the scan button, the readout tells me that it is waiting for input from the computer. But nothing I do has made the computer even acknowledge there is a scanner there.

Assuming the hardware is connected properly.
You are missing driver software for the scanner portion.
The printer may work with the default print driver but the scanner needs a driver to read the information coming in from the scanner.
You did not mention your operating system. Some OS may be more problem then others. You might look at HP support site for latest driver for your HP 3330 and install this. If that doesn't work, check HP site for a FAQ and manual on your 3330.
