Jesus Peace Sign

My guess is, he was probably just holding up 2 fingers indicating the number 2. As if to say, These 2 things, or there are 2 (such and such), or referring to 2 people...That kind of thing.

The idea in the Da Vinci code that the "V" shape, made by holding up 2 fingers, indicating the lines of a females crotch, sounds rediculous.

I know it was supposed to be Da vinci's secret code, inferring that he was married to Mary Magnaline but that is just Da vinci's theory. According to Da Vinci. he was privy to SECRET information about Jesus.

HOW could he? The last supper took place, hundreds of years, before he was even born.

We still have no proof of ANY of it.

SO, I'm going with the idea, that paintings that were done by OTHER artists, just put that in there to illustrate, that he was simply talking and used the hand gesture of 2 fingers, simply indicating, that he was referring to 2 of something. Because in the original, he WAS holding up 2 fingers but I think way too many people are reading WAY too much into that.

It just seems more plausible to me, that he was talking about something that included the number 2.

Just my own personal theory.

It's a mudra. In Eastern religion it indicates teaching, or a teacher.

Some paintings also show his right hand in that position, while the left hand points to his heart, or heart chakra.

Perhaps these depictions (and they are common) are in reference to the belief that Jesus, in his 30-year hiatus, was studying with the Essenes, an ascetic Jewish mystic sect that existed in ancient Palestine. They would have been aware of, and may have practiced, various Eastern religions.

Of course, the more mundane reason could be that this is the hand gesture priests use to bless people. I'm sure someone else will give you that information.

If you are referring to the gesture that Jesus is making, particularly in Byzantine icons of Christ Pantocrator (like this one in Hagia Sophia in Istanbul http://www.biblewheel.com/images/christ_pantocrator_hagia_sophia.jpg ), it is a sign of benediction/blessing. Actually the relationship of his fingers is to form "IC XC", the intials for (and translated from Greek into English) "Jesus Christos" (see discussion at Byzantine Forum http://www.byzcath.org/bboard/Forum2/HTML/000625.html) The forefinger is extended to represent "I" and incline the middle finger to represent "C." Then cross the thumb with the finger next to the middle one to make "X" and then incline the pinky finger for the final "C." Both Orthodox and Roman Catholic clergy also use this gesture to bless people.

It is a medieval sign of benediction and blessing.

Holding the book represents the 'judgment' book where all sins are written down for each living person.

It represents the freedom from judgment IF you will follow Him and accept His sacrifice.

It's called a mudra. If you look into Hinduism/Buddhism you can find lots of them being used by the Buddha. The particular one you're referring to perhaps stands for knowledge.
