That's why they call Religion...the Opiate of the People!
It gives Meaning to their Lives...and encourages Co-operation between them!...They believe that being a Good Person will grant them entry into Heaven...Where they'll One Day meet again with all their Loved Ones! ( Or, a 1-Way Ticket-to-Hell...if they falter! )
I happen to agree with Your viewpoint completely.
When I swat a mosquito biting my neck, a dog is killed by a car, etc....Nobody ever says, " Well, at least It may go to Heaven!?"
We are merely organisms on this Planet, just like every other organism...Spawned by our Parents...Who were spawned by Theirs...and, On-and-On!
Human Beings are just a small link in the Chain of Evolution...We all just live our lives & die, Others are born, live their lives & eventually die also...No Big Deal!...I've never lost any sleep over it!
Our Purpose for Existence...is simply to Reproduce!!!...to Carry On the Species...Just like the Salmon that complete Long Journies Upstream to Spawn, then Die from the Exertion!...Just like Every Organism on the Earth!

Because they want an afterlife and immortality. But if you believe that afterlife is nothingness then have you ever thought you might be more aligned to a Buddhist Zen way of thinking? Of course they believe that only when you reach the highest level of perfection in life do you go into Nirvana or nothingness....Funny, huh? You would think some people if they believed this would screw up on purpose in life just to be reincarnated again and get a second chance....

Attaining nothingness is a goal in some forms of Buddhism, isn't it? The religious people are uncomfortable with it because they have been told that their souls will be with God in a state of bliss forever. The thought of losing out on eternal peace and contentment is as disturbing to them as the thought of losing anything great that was promised. They don't want to have their buzz stomped.
I am no longer an atheist, I believe in some kind of god, it's just not their God. When I was an atheist, though, I took comfort in knowing that the matter that composed my body had always been and would always be part of a vast universe. Then I found out that according to quantum theory, all matter is composed of wavelengths of energy and it isn't really matter at all. When i think about this kind of stuff, it only leads to more questions.

Why is the prospect of somethingness so disconcerting to atheists? I am religious, and believe that the afterlife is somethingness, just like before life began. This thought brings me peace. But when listening to non-believers, it seems that the same thought is terrifying to them. How come?

It gives their lives meaning and hope, in my opinion. I don't believe so really can't say for sure. Just for the record to answer the question lampoilman asked, I am not in the least terrified by the thought of an afterlife, I just don't believe there is anything more.

Because in any religion, the doctrine of an afterlife or "heaven" has always been part of any religious group. Nothingness or the concept of it is disconcerting because it means after we die, we die and that's that. Nothing. Its disconcerting because people follow the doctrines and teaching of their religions and to be faced with "nothingness" is like telling them - all their efforts to study, practice, become good followers of their faith was for nothing since when they die - they are gone and nowhere to go to. Its like implying you don't have a soul.

Because they cannot face mortality, they are terrified of it.Also, they are so vain, they cannot imagine a world, earthly or heavenly, which they are not part of.As an Atheist,I too, feel peace at the prospect of nothingness.I didn't exist before conception,I won't exist after death, knowing this makes life a lot sweeter.

When i don't know God,Jesus and Saint Mary, i thing i whant my children ,because i feel, that in my children i will live, after my death. After My Saint Mary of Medjugorje opens my heart, i understand that i am body and soul, the body is the instrument of my soul. Soul has a part of God Spirit, which God brows throw the men when God Created the men.
I think the first was the good energy in Univers, this is The Eternal God ,without end, just the forms can be others,so our soul with all good informations is eternal, if we abandon to God.The way to the eternal life is showed by our Lord Jesus,we must follow Him.

I dont have enough faith to believe in evolution and nothingness.
If we didnt come from anywhere and dont go anywhere when we die....if there was nothingness after death, what is this? some crazy dream? caused by what? Nothing is real. Reality is a lie. Nothing exists. Wow you must be on some pretty crazy drugs to buy that.

If the afterlife is nothingness, then you have nothing to be
concerned with. But if hell is a possibility then you might want
to reconsider. I'm praying for you.
