The reason I'm asking this question is because I just recently filled my prescription for this medication and it on the package that I saved $325.00. I only got 30 5 mg tablets. So, that means that the average price of one tablet cost around $10.75. I think that is crazy.

Of course it is. But it is a new drug, developed by a company, and they get patent right protections on the chemical make up for 17 years. During this time, they gouge anyone one who has it prescribed. Docs don't care about the cost -- they aren't paying for it. And they are usually informed about new drugs by the drug reps who stop by their offices on a regular basis. Some companies re-imburse a doc for prescribing their drug....Other older, off patent meds often work just as well. You might wish to have another talk with your doc.

How Much Does Abilify Cost

New drugs are expensive, because they are still paying off the cost of the research and development, the safety testing, the clinical trials, and the getting of government approval.

Old drugs probably paid less for all that, as regulations were looser, and they have had longer to pay off the cost, too.

A drug company only has a patent for a few years after all the testing is finished; they would have set up the patent while testing; before it earned any $$. A lot of drugs tested are failed, too. Thus, you are paying for research etc on their failed drugs., too.

"Ask your doctor if he/she can prescribed you a generic one. It will still work."

These are available, after the patent runs out. They have to be "as good", by law. They can save you $$.

Ooohhhh......, it's just means what you're getting is a genuine drug made by a well established company, possible in the U.S.. the other thing is much of it (the money) goes into their research, bonuses, salary, over head, copy right cost, and advertisement cost. Ask your doctor if he/she can prescribed you a generic one. It will still work.

Indeed you will pay through the nose for new drugs but there are facets to be considered. Take away all the marketing costs, R&D costs (millions of $$$) & maybe this actual chemical entity is very. very expensive to synthesise?
