It won't kill your cat, but don't let him/her do it regularly. They are made very differently, and it's unhealthy as a diet. But as an accidental thing, it's the same as the cat eating some of your food. Not healthy, but not deadly. Don't fret.

I would not encourage it. Cats need more protein than dog food has in it. If it is a matter of jealousy that the cat is eating the dog food. Feed her first and separately from the dog. Maybe try mixing caned cat food with the dry cat food. Give her a special area to eat that the dog can't get to. If she eats first she will be full and maybe not be so inclined to eat the dogs food.

My cat does the same thing. I spoke to the vet about it, and he told me that it's ok if a cat eats dog food, but that dog's can't eat cat food because it's so high in protein. You can try training them away from the food, but it takes a lot of vigilance. Or let it go and live with it. Good luclk!

I'm not sure, but I suddenly recall when I was at school, some of the kids were talking about the funny things their pets do and I heard of some cats eating dog food (where the kid's families had both a dog and a cat) but I'm not sure if it's good for them or not.

Occassionally snacking on dog food is alright for a cat, if that's what you mean.
But if you think that you can just buy dog food, think again. Cats and dogs need different minerals and nutrients, and cat/dog food is developed with these needs in mind - a cat needs cat food in order to stay healthy, because dog food can't supply everything your cat needs.

Absolutely not! Because cat's diet should be mainly based on protein. The best diet for cat is 70 to 80% protein, 10 to 20% fat, vitamins, minerals and just A LITTLE carbs. But dogs need less protein, so dog foods have less protein around 20 to 30%, and more carb ingredients which is ok for dogs but a risky and not healthy diet for cat's body system.

Yes it is.. Made out of the same stuff.. I run a kennel in central wisconsin.. many times the cat's like the dog food better. You just don't want the cat to eat a lot, because the dog food will make your cat gain a few pounds.....

When I was growing up, my dad always fed the cats dog food-never bought cat food. We had some for a long time. My cat eats both cat food and dog food.

no, coz dog food is for gods, cat food is for cats. dog food is specially designed to give high nutrition to a dog and its needs, whilst cats eat differently. quickly change the menu before the cat will act like a dog.

Yes it is OK if it is only in moderation. Cats HAVE to have a certain vitamin in their diet (Can't recall name) in order to maintain their eye sight. Feeding your cat strictly dog food won't provide him/her with that vitamin, and will ultimately result with your cat going blind. But maybe you can use the dog food as a treat for your cat once in a while. That will absolutely be just fine.
