what flaming idiot thought win 2000 was better than XP? 2000 is a howling, mangy mongrel mutt of an operating system. MS abandoned it completely to create XP. First task is to give that guy one huge enormous bollocking for doing such a stupid, backwards and pointless piece of vandalism to your PC.

So XP installation has partitioned your drive?

First step would be to borrow one of those USB backup drives- the proper big fat ones - and put ALL your data on that. Verify that it worked before proceeding, and make sure you check every odd little place where your data might have ended up.

Then reinstall windows XP from scratch but as you do it make sure that you choose the options that involve obliterating the entire contents of the drive and starting it from scratch. That may mean deleting all of the existing partitions and creating one new partition that takes up the whole drive.

The alternative is to start with the PC as it is now, copy all of your data over into the partition with XP on it, and then download one of those software utilities that manages partitions for you. You would set it to delete the 2000 partition and put all of that space into the XP partition. http://www.cnet.com is the best place to get downloads like that. I don't have the name of a good prog I'm afraid.

Whichever step you take, I would strongly suggest taking an external copy of everything and keeping it until everything is working the way you want it and you've recovered your data and a good couple of weeks have passed!

Beware of Norton Ghost. It can mess your drive up worse than your friend did.

good luck

THE MOST SIMPLEST WAY. Sounds like you created a partition with two operating systems.....go in on your windows 2000 and create a boot disk...if I'm right, it's under add/remove programs in your control panel under a tab that says "create boot disk" use a 3 1/2 floppy once it's done leave the disk in and reboot your computer. At the command prompt type "fdisk" You need to delete the partition that was created. should be option # 4 to view it and then #2 to delete the partition.

Then remove the disk and reboot the system under windows 2000 again. Reinstall the windows xp be sure you choose upgrade when installing the xp version and it will overwrite 2000 and keep your software and personal files.....just read the instructions.....

> Go to "Start" menu of Windows XP
> Go to "All Programs"
> Go to "Accessories"
> Go to "System Tools"
> Go to "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard"
> Follow directions of wizard
> Done!

or

> Insert Windows XP CD into CD-ROM
> Select "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard"
> Follow directions of wizard
> Done!

Unfortunately, this will only take care of the files and settings, not the programs though.

You will have to either reinstall the programs, or you could make the Windows XP hard drive the primary master drive. By doing this, you can just go to the other hard drive via Windows XP explorer and launch programs installed on the Windows 2000 hard drive.

try add remove programs in control panel see if you can uninstall windows 2000 if you can then xp should still be there or use the upgrade option on your xp disc but you might lose some files or folders so back up any thing important to cd or second hard drive if you have one. best of luck

best is to save all your stuff in to a disc /dvd sd card before you do anything check if you installed window XP not install a driver from that CD ... and try Auto Run if not sure ...
if he succefully put windows 2000 over xp without deleting all your stuff then it seems possible to reverse the process but best to check wit the guy who installed it because if u took it to somewhere else and doesnt work the first guy doesnt have any more liabilities... usualy get warranties when someone proffesional fixes or up grade your computer

Load the CD in the CD-Drive and restart your computer with the boot order set to look for CD first. IT will automatically pick the xp installation and ask you to overwrite over the old version of windows. you may have to take backup of your files into another drive for safety.

i had the same prob on my laptop, what you need to do is remove 2000 by storing it on a disc then install xp.You can't overwrite these certain programmes thats why 2000 is still there.

You need to check to be sure that it was in fact stored on another driver. I've never heard of that. Perhaps it was stored in another directory or disc.
