Hi, I can give you some input on this because I've been on the South Beach Diet for two weeks now along with my mother and brother. It involves cutting out the carbs like you mentioned for Phase 1 which last two weeks and then you can add certain carbs like whole grain bread or fruit etc... So far I've lost 11 pounds and I don't have the sugar cravings I used to have. If you look at how much sugar is in everything processed you would be suprised. No wonder America has so much Diabieties! I have been eating asparigus, brocolli, peppers, beens, and squash but you don't want corn or carrots because they have a lot of sugar. I'll also say it has been unusual in my workouts too. Because of not having alot of carbs I don't have to kill myself working out, just a couple hundred calories and I'm done. Now that Phase 1 is over and I add certain healthy carbs back I'm sure that I'll have more fuel to burn so to speak. Anyway, try it out, get some lean beef, fish, lean roast, chicken and you'll see that you are full faster without indulging yourself in sugary foods. I have a football player frame and love to eat so If I can do it anyone can. Good luck!!!

I would eliminate most fruits except small amounts of raspberries and strawberries, as these are low-glycemic fruits. But then take a vitamin C supplement. The key is to only cut out refined sugar and refined carbs. Only eat whole grains. My naturopathic doctor told me not to eat corn, sweet potatoes, or beets as these have high sugar content. If you must have a small amount of potatoes, choose red ones--I don't know why, I've just heard that they are less starchy than others. Any other vegetable, including tomato (i know, it's really a fruit) is ok to eat and should be eaten a lot. It does work if you don't cheat. I lost 25 pounds (pregnancy weight) and didn't exercise a single bit. I ate a lot, too. Oh yeah, and don't eat a bunch of fatty meat and bacon and nasty crap. Get LEAN meats and eat a ton of it. I got used to it after the 48 hours of fatigue and now carbs make me sick. My doctor says I'm healthier now than I was before I was pregnant. If you need a sweetener for coffee or tea, look into stevia (stevia.net). You can buy it in health food stores and some grocery stores. It's plant-derived so you won't be ingesting nasty chemicals like aspartame.

It is mostly NOT your fault, if you need to lose weight. The way you have been taught to eat is responsible for making obesity the number one health problem in the world (according to Atlantic Monthly magazine) replacing hunger and infectious disease. You need to re-learn how to eat so you can become thin. Not a diet, but diet lifestyle.

Well.. I come down somewhere in the middle between the low carb gurus and the low fat gurus... with a simple 'common sense' approach. I read up on the pros and cons of each method, but it still boils down to the basics: portion control and energy in-energy out... of course, common sense doesn't sell any books or programs and it's not exciting, but it works for me and my wallet lol.

if there is one carb you eat a lot of, such as Fries or white bread sandwiches, then cutting that one thing out is easier than rationing everything. A balanced diet is best.

EG I have given up chocolate biscuits completely. I have almost stopped dreaming about them, too.

Variety and moderation are required. The vitamins and enzymes in vegetables are as important as the starch and fiber qualities. Energy carbs are necessary; they help you get active. Fruits are quite necessary,too.....Power up; then you can move and know you're alive.

fruits and veggies are still good to eat while you are trying to loose weight, yet things high in sugar such as carrots may be something to stay away from, fruits you can pretty much eat anything, but again stay away from things high in sugar because it will just turn into fat
