If you want to donate money/items to help support deployed military around the world, your best bet would be the Red Cross or the USO. Either of these will be happy to accept donations, you can also contact any of the military lodges, such as Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), American Legion, Marine Corps League (MCL). If you are near a military installation, you can also donate to the Army/Air Force/Navy Relief Foundations. While the Relief donations may not directly support those in the field, they do offer a great deal of support to the families that are left behind such as day care and counseling.

Why would you want to?
My husband has served two Tours of Iraq. He is perfectly well paid! My friend whose husband was sadly killed in Iraq has been provided with everything she needs, including a house by the Military and her Husband's Colleagues. Servicemen & women have subsidised housing, salary, and overseas allowances, excellent and free medical care and a career they love. Everyone serving abroad has people at home who love and support them. They can buy pretty much everything they need, and are sent more than they ever want from home. Soldiers have wives, girlfriends, Mothers, Fathers, siblings, neighbours and friends to suport them in every way and frankly, it's patronising for people they don't know to want to give them money in some half hearted gesture!

By the way. We wives don't need counselling. If you marry into The Forces you know what you are getting into and you need to get on with it, just as millions of wives of civilians who work away from home have to.

The best way to support the troops is to pay your taxes and oppose tax cuts. The military is in real budgetary trouble right now, and the missions we as a nation are giving the military exceed what we are paying them. Stop with the "support the troops" crap and pay taxes!
