When was this? There have always been "immigration problems." Where did you grow up?

As for free trade, it is needed. Look at our smokin economy of the last few years. The illegals are here cause they know how to skirt the system, and there's a zillion jobs.

Unemployment at 4.5% is the envy of the world. I work in IT and lots has gone overseas. It sounds odd, but its a good thing. Lower cost means more smaller firms can afford advanced tech. More can compete in the global market.

It also creates enormous new markets for US goods as new middle-class economies emerge. The US is only 5% of the world population, and everyone wants what the US has. Nice homes, cars, appliances, good food, entertainment, etc.

Study economics. It'll help. I also counseled many tech guys losing their jobs. A career is not a life. We adapt.

A few tech changes could propel the US even into a major high-tech manufacturing environment again. Things look bright, but workers need decent educations.

no, nobody remembers the world before immigration problems since they started around 40000 years ago here in North America and I'm pretty sure no one is still around from then. as for problems with free trade, you might not like the way it's gone, but I wouldn't necessarily say that the world was a better place before we had those problems to deal with. think of all you have gained since then, including the internet. it's true that a lot of terrible problems have been caused by the stupid free trade agreements we allowed ourselves to be stuck with but at least you don't have to think seriously about being stuck in a factory doing the same repetitive motion over and over again all day every day for the next 40 years of your life. get yourself a vision, some creativity, some hope, and a work ethic and you may or may not be fine, but at least you'll be busy.

Many people over 40 can remember how much better things were in the 60's when immgration was tightly controlled and trade was subject to import fees and export taxes and most Agrocutural fruit and Vegies were banned from entering California and for good reason they carry the Mexican fruit fly.

Have you never read a single school book? The entire history of the human race is about migrations, war and trade.

If 10 years ago was the good old days, how bad is it going to suck 10 years from now to make today the good old days.

Yes I lived it. I think Mario Cuomo, previous govenor of New York, said it best.

'When my parents came here [legally] if you worked hard you would make it. Now, if you work hard you MIGHT make it'.

I for one would love to have those pre-nafta and outsourcing days back.
