It's a good idea to have at least some euros with you before you go, perhaps EUR 50 or so, just in case you're hungry or need to take a train before you reach an atm. Otherwise, just use your ATM card. You will enjoy a better rate and fewer fees. There should be a plethora of ATMs before you even leave the airport if you are travelling within Eurozone. Otherwise, there will be plenty of ATMs in town as well.

Have a backup plan for if your ATM card is lost, stolen, or doesn't work. You could have USD or EUR denominated traveller's cheques, just in case. Also, it would be good to take several credit cards with you, to make purchases, or take cash advances from, should your ATM card fail or be stolen.

If you have more than one account with an atm card, take them all with you, have funds in each of the accounts, and store them in different places while travelling, so that if one bag or wallet gets stolen, you will have backup.

American Express offices will cash personal cheques for you, up to a certain amount in the local currency if you are a cardholder.

I will go with bringing an ATM card. You get better inter-bank rate plus without the charges of withdrawing with a debit card. Otherwise bring cash with you to change there.

exchanging the dollar into a euro would be much safer than using your credit card...You never know when people are taking advantage of you and stealing your information

i would bring very little cash with me, just in case, what if you lose it, drop it, someone snags it-the atm card can be replaced-but your cold cash cannot.

You might actually want to bring cash, you might be able to exchange cash for a higher rate than using your debit card.

...and no service charges.
