There really is no way to get them to stop. I am 26 and still grind my teeth. I have had a splint for a couple of years now. I wear my splint (also called a night guard) at night. I still clench my jaw and grind my teeth, but it prevents damage to my teeth and helps keep down the headaches that come as a result of this pressure. One potential problem for teeth grinders and jaw clenchers is that once there are any fillings, the pressure on the teeth can cause the tooth around a filling to crack. Not nice! I would suggest bringing it up more specifically to your dentist and if he/she isn't helpful, seek a second opinion.

wow - very unusual for children this age. This is stress, or an abnormal bite pattern that definately needs to get fixed fast! Scr*w that idiot dentist you are going to and get them to an orthodontist or another dentist. This could cause all sorts of problems. I am not a professional, just making logical guesses. Go see someone who knows their stuff and keep looking until you find one.

It's stress. Try to ease the stress in his daily routine. Maybe he's over-scheduled, or insecure about something. Try some extra comforting and cuddling during the day.

you may want to get one of those kiddie teeth guards, like they need in flag football, to help, for a quick fix at least. wal-mart, for around $1
