When you have the black stuff on your fingers, dip them in a small amount of water. You will notice that the black stuff turns the water red. That is flea poop. The red is your kitty's blood.
Flea collars are pointless. They only kill fleas right next to the collar. You need to go to a vet or a feed store for Advantage. Frontline works great too. This is the easiest, safest, most effective way to treat fleas.
Fleas are also hiding in your carpet, the cat's bed (where ever he sleeps) and your yard. While you are at the feed store, pick up something that will kill fleas in these areas. Pay special attention to the directions that say, re-treat after a little while. Flea eggs are indistructable and new fleas hatch every few days, so you have to treat a few times to kill them all.
Vacuming will also be key in getting rid of the fleas. Vacumn alot for the next few weeks.
Kitty's fur will stop falling out when the fleas are gone.

If its small black flecks, then it sounds like flea poop to me. Flea collars aren't that effective and they don't work for long. The best thing you can do for your cat is take it to a vet. There are other products they can recommend that work far better than the collars.

Flea collars don't *always* prevent fleas. Give him a flea powdering then take him to a vet, just in case something else is wrong :)

Are they small, hard black bits like grains of sand? These are fleas pooh.
Just because she has a flea collar doesn't mean she definitely doesn't have fleas.

He may have fungi. He needs special treatment. It is easy enough (you put a powder of dactarin on him twice a day for a month), but a vet should confirm it first, because it could be something different.

my cat has that problem too.....its nothing serious. All you have to do is go to a petstore/vet and ask for a fungus cream. I dont know what its called. But the fungus cream works. Or you can always ask your vet.
