My husband and I went through the same problem a few months ago. If you still had the cat I would recommend using Frontline Plus for cats, it killed the fleas on the cats in 24 hours. (honestly, they were dead fleas where they slept a few hours later)
Then naturally the fleas start to attack you cause they can't bite the cats, so use "Zodiac Advanced Indoor Insect Spray". Its a pain in the ***, but SPRAY EVERYWHERE!!!! all upholsteryand carpets in the house, and vaccuum as directed. This STUFF WORKS. A 3/4 can took care of the couch, HUGE scratching post, carpet, bed, everything.
Two weeks later no fleas to be found. And it works up to seven months. We got it at Petsmart, try it it works!!!

There are flea killers that are made specifically for your house. Try spraying one of those around the room and see if that helps.
When we have flea problems...we normally just give our cats Advantage and the cat ends up dispersing the medicine all over the house and that takes care of the flea problem on the cat and in the house! But obviously...that's not an option for you. Unless you have a dog or another cat?

Sometimes ,sprinkling salt on the floor will help.My friend told me that when I had a cat,and it worked pretty well. The only thing was,I was so desperate that I did more than sprinkle, and we live in a high-humidity area.I had a swamp in the house for days.Salt will pull water out of the air and leave it in your carpet. We are going through it again since we had a dog in the house(she has to stay outside most of the time, now, because nothing works on her)and we still can't really get rid of them.I can't use the salt right now because it's so humid.Let's just pray for a winter that is cold enough to kill them, this year.

Buy one of those flea bombs from the drug or pet store. You'll have to cover your furniture, etc but it will kill the fleas and their eggs. It might just take one application. You set it off, it sprays the entire can contents in your room. Leave the house while it sprays. A few hours later, you come back to your house and no more fleas!

Good Luck! I'm going through this as well, except I still have my kitties. Vacuum and empty the bag right away, outside. You can get flea powders to sprinkle on your carpet/floor that you can vacuum up after, there are sprays that work the same way, too. I'm allergic to flea bites myself, so I understand what you're going through.
