Make it a dining room if that's what you want. People will think you are funnier when you try to cram all your guests into your kitchen.
I think having a fake living room is weird anyway.

If you must have a dining room than use the space upstairs. I would consider maybe expanding the kitchen by taking out a wall (if it is possible) or making a large pass through to tie the areas together.
I bought a 107yr old Victorian a little over a year ago. I should have a formal dining room. However that is the main traffic room and the kitchen is huge! Instead I will have a large bar like table in the kitchen and have a pool table in the dining room.
It is your space. Unless you do a ton of entertaining either formal or informal, dining rooms are not being used as dining rooms anymore!

Off the top of my head, I would suggest that you put a dining room table at the end of the living room that is closest to the kitchen and then have your regular living room furniture at the other end.
I have a few personal thoughts on dining rooms. I have moved a lot and lived in a lot of different houses, all having dining rooms. Except for a few times a year, the dining room was just a catch-all for folded laundry, the table became my husband's desk and the rest of the family just used it as a place to walk thru to get to the rest of the house. So, I guess I am saying that I don't think if your space is limited that a dining room is the wisest use of space. I would love to just have an eat-in kitchen.

Well, I agree with those who say that it is your house and you can do whatever you like with it. You should not be limited by "what people might think". But, I would say that going with a dining room upstairs (near the kitchen, right) would probably get a lot more use if you have a cozy, comfy "livingroom/family room" downstairs.
We have a huge diningroom right now and I love it. We entertain family and friends quite a bit, and this room gets a lot of use! Our kitchen is also quite large and, in fact, we have a sofa and a large armchair in it by the wood stove there. The room that does not get any use at all, hardly, is the "formal" livingroom that we have as most of our company tend to hang out in the kitchen before dinner and then stay at the table, in the diningroom for quite a while, after a big meal.
So, if it were me, I would use the room as a diningroom.

when you say its close enough to to use as a dining. How about maybe taking a a wall out to open up the space between the kitchen and this room or if there is a wall with the door way that could be taken down. My kitchen and dining room are seperated by a island with cabinets.nice open space. There are many ways to make it like a dining room as other said. One is also to put the same flooring in both rooms after opening it up makes a nice even transition. Also its up to you if you want to do this you have to live in the space And it wont be odd once its done..

I'm a bit confused... are you talking about using the upstairs room as a dining room? and if so, I think that might be a bit of a chore trying to set and tote dishes up and down steps. However, I agree with everyone else... it is your home and you should do what pleases you and is comfortable and practical. Personally I would put a type of bar at one end of the kitchen (if extra seating is the problem) otherwise I'd say a kitchen table is all you really need.

I think you should do whatever pleases you. I have no dining either. Have a large L-shaped living room. Placed dining table in that room in the part nearest the kitchen.

YES, IT'S YOUR HOUSE, YOU CAN HAVE THINGS YOUR WAY. YOU COULD MAKE IT INTO THE DINING ROOM AND HAVE A NICE, SMALL CASUAL SEATING AREA IN THERE, TOO, WITH PLANTS, A FEW PERFECT ACCESSORIES AND GREAT ART WORK ON THE WALLS.
AFTER I REMODELED MY HOUSE I DIDN'T HAVE A DINING ROOM. WE USED THE KITCHEN FOR A SMALL TABLE AND SOMETIMES ATE ON TV TRAYS IN THE LIVING ROOM. NOT MY FAVORITE THING BUT IT WAS FUN SOMETIMES. I WOULDN'T WORRY ABOUT WHAT ANYONE ELSE THINKS. THEY DON'T LIVE THERE AND YOU CAN'T PLEASE EVERYONE...AND SHOULDN'T HAVE TO.
