there is a special pair of tweezers that is used for the purpose of removing splinters from under the nail. it hurts like hell but is done in a little while. the other option is to wait for it to grow out with your nail and risk infection and the constant pain of having a foriegn object in your nail bed. go to your doctor to have it pulled out it will be the least painful option.

in regards to previous answers NEVER use hydrogen peroxide on an open wound as it kills the immune cells that rush to the area opening the wound for a bigger infection.

oh no, that's happened to me before -- very painful!! the technical name for this is a "subungual splinter". ok, you've got to worry about 1) getting it out of there and 2) infection. the question is how far is it under the fingernail? is any of it sticking out? I'm wondering if you could cut the fingernail really short and then grab on to the splinter with a tweezer and pull it out. If you can't reach it yourself, then I'm afraid you'll have to see a doctor. Wash it well with soap and water, and soak in hydrogen peroxide or high salt solution to kill any bacteria that's around it for the time being.

"Splinter injuries are common, but larger and deeper splinters are often difficult and painful to remove at home. These splinters often present as a foreign body embedded in the superficial or subcutaneous soft tissues. Whenever possible, reactive objects like wood, thorns, spines, and vegetative material should be removed immediately, before inflammation or infection occurs. Superficial horizontal splinters are generally visible on inspection or easily palpated. A horizontal splinter is exposed completely by incising the skin over the length of the long axis of the splinter, and removed by lifting it out with forceps. A subungual splinter may be removed by cutting out a V-shaped piece of the nail. The point of the V is at the proximal tip of the splinter, which is grasped and removed, taking particular care not to push the splinter further into the nail bed. Removal of an elusive splinter can be challenging and may require the use of imaging modalities for better localization. Deeper splinters, especially those close to important structures such as nerves, tendons, blood vessels, or vital organs, should be referred for removal."

put Elmers glue down there when it gets kinda dry slowly peel it off; that might work . . . . . might have to do it a few times though; good luck! By the way, a little piece of wood is called a splinter!

When we have something like that happen around here, we go to our local Wal-Mart and buy some Prid. It is a drawing salve, and it really does the trick. Hope you get it out of there..that does hurt!

Oh, dig it out. Use a needle. Sterlize the needle by burning it for about 5 seconds under a flame (lighter), then get it out. It could get infected if you don't.

It might get infected, but I don't think it's life-threatening unless your immune system is compromised.
