Sorry, but the answer is -- not possible. Dognhorsemom is exactly correct about entry requirements to China -- but Tibet is another issue altogether. You won't be able to legally accept a job there, and would not be granted a work visa or residence permit -- even if you married a Tibetan.

Even just going there as a tourist takes a bit of paperwork -- you have to join a tour group (although these days you don't have to stay with it, just have the receipt/permission slip). Your entry into Tibet is limited in time by the length of your tour. No one is going to come breaking your hotel door down to check our permits, but there are MANY check points inside the territory, and you'd certainly get stopped sooner or later. Staying in one place wouldn't help either, as the local police would definitely notice that you were hanging around a bit longer than usual -- and again, check your permits.

In short, it's not a problem at all to hang out for 2 to 6 weeks, but you'd be hard pressed to stay longer. And the cops do not allow foreigners to practice religion with any group inside China -- only with other foreigners.

You could always go just across the border to Dharmsala, the adopted home of the Dalai Lama in India -- you could stay there indefinitely.

Here are the entry requirements for China:

Passport and visa required. Due to tightened visa policy, travelers may be required to undergo a personal interview. Tourist visas are issued only after receipt of a confirmation letter from a Chinese tour agency or letter of invitation from a relative in China. Single-entry visa requires $50 processing fee, double-entry visa fee $75 (no personal checks). A multiple-entry visa requires $100 for a 6-month visa, and $150 for a 12-24 month visa. 1 tourist visa application form, and 1 photo required. Allow at least 4 business days for processing. Visa valid 90 days from date of issue. If applicant is HIV positive, entry not permitted for any purpose. For more detailed information, contact the Visa Section of the Chinese Embassy, 2201 Wisconsin Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20007 (202/338-6688) or nearest Consulate General: Chicago (312/573-3070), Houston (713/521-9859), Los Angeles (213/807-8006), New York (212/868-2078) or San Francisco (415/674-2940). I am sure you can do what you like to do there. You will need to get the proper visa for your long stay though. This is something that is pretty standard world wide..

If you really are so eager, I think your idea to marry a local sounds good.

Why not stay in your own country and meditate, and work to make it a better place? Heaven knows it needs the help. (as do all countries!)
