Photoshop CS2 is the best out there for image editing. There is only one. THere aren't multiple versions of it. It's expensive, but worth the investment.
There are tons of books on the matter of teaching you. If you visit www.amherstmedia.com they have an entire section on Photoshop Training.
There is another software out there that has a similar look and feature and is only like $79. It's called Photoshop Plus 10 Studio Pack. It's the best Photoshop clone out there.

It may come with a built in tutorial on how to use it's most basic features.
Here is a link to a book found on amazon.

Photoshop CS2 is mainly for digital photo editing.
Photoshop 7 is for making graphics from scratch as well as photo editing. Using Photoshop 7 is an art, is very cheap for what it offers. There is a wide variety of books on how best to use it. If you look in Popular Photography, every year there are seminars on how to best use Photoshop.

photoshop is top of the line but it also comes with that price tag. if you're a student or know someone who is there's a link below to get the entire adobe CS2 suite for the price of just photoshop in the store. all you have to do is give proof you're a student. (they just asked me for my student ID) this version also comes with training dvd's. how good they are depends on you. i always liked the 'teach yourself visually' or 'classroom in a book' series. both are available at barnes and noble. just search by software title. they both have simple steps and lots of pictures so it's easy to follow.
there's also a free program called gimp. it's essentially photoshop but without as many bells and whistles. but it's an excellent program and might be a good starter for you if you're not sure if you want to shell out all the $$ for photoshop just yet. gimp is very easy to use and would be a good 'training ground' should you choose to upgrade to photoshop.

Photoshop actually takes years to totally master. All you can really do is play and play..with it.
There are some good tutorials out there, but just my opinion.. It's easier for me to just try to do something to figure it out.
