Good question. I'm not so prone to depression as I am to mania (which has self-destructive behaviors too) and I know that I'm too well-rehearsed in denial, so my answer comes from someone dear to me who is very experienced in depression. He says that by even being smart enough to recognize your own self-destructive behaviors usually isn't enough to simply overcome them. You need professional help to work it through, a solid psychiatric medical doctor and to work with a qualified psychologist to discuss your current situation, as well as the past. They can determine the best medication for you as well, and be patient, it took a lot of time and events to get ill with depression and it takes time to get well. But getting real help and putting your best efforts into it is well worth your recovery. Hope this helped.

Maybe you cannot. That is not such a bad thing. The trouble comes when you injure yourself. Self destructive behaviors can be as mild as pinching your skin so that it hurts to drinking too much alcohol to driving really fast in a car. If you are worried, you can contact a mental health professional for medication, advise or support. If you are suicidal, then make sure you tell someone and beg them to hear what you are telling them. Suicide is deadly, but good times come again if you remain alive. I wish you the best. JG

i know how hard it is to stop because i too suffered from self-mutilation for about 3 years and im now in recovery... sometimes depression is only a phase and will subside and with that, so will your self-destructive behaviors. if it isnt a phase then you need to come to terms with whatever it is that makes you so depressed. therapy is usually the best way to figure out exactly what it is that gets you to the point of sulf-destruction... if you can talk it out with friends and try to figure out whats going on then great; if not, then youre gonna need to talk to a professional... good luck!

Whatever you do, DON'T take ANY drugs, perscription or otherwise. They will make you worse, NOT better.

I used to be very self-destructive a few years ago. It got so bad, I ended up in the hospital. I can't say that I've completely stopped, but I don't do it as often or as severe any more. It's not because a doctor 'cured' me either. I started recovering after I had stopped seeing my doctor regularly. The thing you need to do to stop hurting yourself is a very hard and scary thing to do, but it is possible to stop. You need to face why you hurt yourself. You need to face your feelings and deal with them in a positive way rather than a negative way. I know its very hard, but it can be done, you need to know that.

Do you believe in God? He can help you through anything. Depression is not a chemical disorder, its a spiritual problem. Satan is making you depressed. He uses depression to attack people, one of his many ways. In order to overcome depression, you need to do spiritual battle. My mom has done spiritual battle in my behalf when I was unable to myself, during my darkest depressions. It worked far better than anything any doctor has ever attempted to do for me. There are many ways to do spiritual battle. Do you have a Bible? If you do, read it out loud when you feel depressed. Don't stop reading out loud until you feel better. I say out loud, because it's one of the ways to battle Satan. He hates hearing the Bible, and he will leave if you hit him hard enough with the powerful word of God.

The only way you will ever be completely happy, is if you give your troubles to God. He can help you, if you let him. It took me years to learn this, and its true.

A professional therapist can help you to teach yourself to recognize when you are about to get depressed and what you can do to minimize the effects. Cognitive Therapy is a very helpful tool that will allow you to convince yourself that things are not nearly as bad as they appear to be. There are also books available that can help, too.
But, getting help from a professional is the first step.

If you know that depression is your problem go to your doctor and ask him/her to send you to a mental health facility. The Doctor will see you and prescribe some medication that will help you. If the med's. don't work tell your psychiatrist and they will change the dosage or change the medication. But stick with it and work with your doctor's. Be truthful when you talk to them.

Work with a professional who will advise if verbal or psychopharmacologic treatment is best for you.
