I just got a new Vizio HD TV and it has HDMI input. What does this input do for regular dvds?

Yes get HDMI. On some players it upconverts from 480p to 720p etc.

Go to http://www.onecall.com for some great prices on them.

If you are meaning HD Dvd players than I would recommend waiting because at this moment they are in a struggle like VHS and Beta were at the beginning of VCRs. HD DVD is looking like the go ahead guy at this point so Sony could lose another one in Blu ray like they did with the Beta machine.
If you're talking about just a DVD player with HDMI that is not HD but just an upconverting player then by all means go for it. These are very affordable. You will see a much better picture then that of a standard DVD player using the HDMI connector. It is also nice because you only need one connector to transport sound and picture.

That depends on whether you can afford it or not for one. It is the latest in digital technology. so that usually means you pay more to be the first in your block to have. It is not a fad though, it will become the connection of the future.
The other thing you should consider is your receiver on your surround sound.Does it accept HDMI connection?? Basically what HDMI does it keep the signal in the digital domain, but from what I understand about it it not only carries the video signal but also the audio signal, thus eliminating a connection.
I don't think HDMI does anything to the DVDs itself, just leaving the signal entirely in the digital domain.
