what would be the positive and negative effect of allowing students to get free tuition if they made the dean's list every semester

Positives- many students from poor backgrounds or families who have money but want their children to pay for their own education will be able to attend if they are smart enough

Negatives- forcing colleges to do this would eliminate any other academic scholarships or tuition help for ALL students. Many students from rich supportive families would get a free ride while a mediocre student from a middle class background wouldn't get any tuition help. Colleges may also make it ridiculously difficult to get onto the honor roll to make sure that they do not pay out or lose too much money.

It would be great for if great grades allow a student to attend college free, but it would be very difficult to implement and many people could be hurt. Take the above examples and consider what would happen if a poor student (who would have been eligible for tons of financial aid otherwise) got all of his tuition paid because of his good grades, but he just misses the deans list one time - then he is out of school.

The truth of the matter is that in America ANYONE can go to college if they really want to and are willing to take the huge responsibilities. Between financial aid, scholarships, work study, and thousands of banks ready to loan money it is very easy for a good student to get into college and easy enough for a high school student with mediocre grades.

that is absurd. If youre going to make the honor roll, apply for a scholarship, and youll save on tuition. If colleges let every random bookworm go to school for free, there would be no money left in the national budget for higher education.

No, you are thinking colleges are an institution for higher learning. In reality, they are just a business, and trying to make a few bucks.

The quality of education would drop because teachers would get paid less, unless everyone else's tuition were raised.

I think that all education should be free unless you choose to go to a private school. But, all state universities should be free no matter what. This would make it more fair and allow people to get out of poverty more easily.
